How to choose a wallet

A way to decide between an exchange balance, a hot wallet, and a hardware wallet without using a star rating.

Three places a coin can sit

On an exchange, the company can send the coin and you cannot, until you withdraw. In a hot wallet, you can send it, and so can malware that reaches the keys or any signature you approve. In a hardware wallet, a signature still needs the device in your hand, and a lie on the computer still needs you to confirm it. Those are the three failure modes. Pick the one you understand, for the amount you are placing there.

Use the exchange for money you are about to trade, if you accept the company as the holder. Use a hot wallet for an amount you can lose. Use hardware when losing it would matter. That split is editorial. It is not a quote from a fee schedule, and it is not a percent of a portfolio. A person who trades daily and a person who buys once a year do not share a setup. Copying a stranger's percent is how the middle option gets skipped.

Questions that beat a star rating

Which chains do you actually use? An EVM wallet and a Solana wallet are not interchangeable just because both can show a dollar balance. Who made the app, and did you download it from them? Where does the recovery phrase live, and have you proved you can read your own handwriting? Can you see the transaction before you sign? What happens if you lose the phone tomorrow, in practice, not in a slogan?

Swap fees and supported-asset counts move, and this page does not invent today's number. Open the official page linked from the profile. A wallet that supports 'everything' also supports receiving a junk token with a malicious name. Breadth is not a safety feature. The chain you use, installed from the right host, is the feature.

Custody is not the same as the login

Two-factor authentication on an exchange raises the cost of stealing the account. It does not put the keys in your pocket. A PIN on a hot wallet locks the app on that device. It is not a backup of the phrase. Mixing those up is how people buy a hardware device, leave the coins on the exchange, and think the device has done something. The device starts to matter at the withdrawal.

A stablecoin in a wallet you control can still be frozen by its issuer if the contract has that authority. Withdrawing removes the exchange from the path. Read the checker if you want to see whether the contract you hold has a freeze or a blacklist. The canonical dollar tokens are a different case from a copy that borrowed the ticker. The score guide explains the context label. The wallet choice does not switch that label off.

A decision you can finish in one sitting

Name the amount that would hurt to lose. If the balance is below that, a hot wallet or the exchange is enough, and you still write down any phrase you are given. If the balance is above that, order hardware from the maker and do not move the coins until the receive address has been checked on the device and a test has arrived. If you cannot name the amount, you are not choosing a wallet yet. You are shopping.

If a profile still shows an unverified row, that row was not copied from a source on the verification date. Do not treat it as a quiet yes. A missing price is the same idea: this page would rather leave a blank than invent a tag. Star ratings and download counts are omitted for the same reason. The profile link is there so you can read the vendor, not so a missing cell can be filled from memory.

Write down the host you will use, the place the backup lives, and the network you will withdraw on. Leave the phrase out of that note. The token checker belongs in the habit after the wallet exists, for contracts you did not plan to hold. It does not choose the wallet. A drainer does not care which of the three places you picked if you sign the prompt or type the phrase. The choice only helps if the keys are where you think they are.

Questions

Write the backup before the deposit, not after the first successful receive. A test that arrives proves the address. It does not prove you can restore the wallet. If the only copy of the phrase is on the phone that just received the test, the test taught you the network and left the keys in one place. Paper first.

Is a multichain wallet simpler? It is one app to learn, and one phrase that can reach more chains, which is both the convenience and the blast radius. Use it if you really hold those chains. Do not use it as a reason to hold chains you do not understand.

What if I already have coins in three apps? Pick the one you can restore, move the amount that matters to the place that matches the size, and stop creating new phrases until the old ones are written down. More apps are not a diversification if each one is backed up nowhere.

Does a higher star rating mean fewer losses? Ratings measure reviews, not key management. This set does not sort wallets by stars or by affiliate clicks. The questions above are the sort.
